Port Shorts – Avondale Residential Development
Since 2018, The Port has partnered with anchor institutions to bring new homeownership opportunities to Avondale. On a once-vacant lot, 11 beautiful homes, designed by architect Jose Garcia, offer modern comfort, stunning views, and a fresh feeling of possibility. This project is about more than housing, it’s about hope and community.
Avondale, full of energy, history and potential, has been a focus neighborhood of the port since 2018, driven by a partnership with anchor institutions in the area.
“We ended up building nine new construction homes and then rehabbing two additional ones, and it was something that on these streets you had seen so many vacant lots for so long, especially right across the street from one of the biggest elementary schools in Avondale. And then all of a sudden you put in these new construction homes, you start occupying them with residents, and you’re really engaging and really activating streets that haven’t seen that kind of activation in years, from developing unique housing options to financing transformative job creating project.”
The Port is focused on strengthening connections and creating new opportunities for generations to come.
“So ADC was a huge partner on this project. They ended up helping us organize and facilitate three community meetings that were specifically tailored to this project, and really focusing on the surrounding residents to make sure that their voices were heard. The Port is excited to bring a new marquee development to this formerly vacant lot in Avondale.”
Designed by renowned architect Jose Garcia, the development brings 11 thoughtfully designed homes with a focus on comfort and community. ”
Oh my God, this is so important. It’s a- it’s an engine for reconstituting with what I referred to as the fabric of the city. It is the medicine, if you will, in a physical way, to reconstitute that continuous feel of the city.”
Located next to the zoo and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, these homes bring new housing opportunities to Avondale, weaving modern design into the neighborhood’s historic fabric. If you listen closely, you might even hear the monkeys around the corner.
“Without The Port, it doesn’t happen. It’s not just investment, it’s that The Port brings a message of care and hope.
The project’s success really shows what the port’s mission is all about: Investing in neighborhoods to create lasting change and unlocking unique opportunities for growth.
“And a toast to the success and to Eden! Cheers, everyone.”
“We’re going to be doing 12 new construction affordable homes, but with a little bit of a twist. We’re going to be using this as an opportunity for some of our rising contractors to train them up and give them an opportunity to add new construction to their portfolios that hopefully will allow them to have more opportunities to start new construction homes in the future.”
