Ohio Department of Development program awards grants for the remediation of contaminated properties
Cincinnati, OH, July 5, 2022 – The Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority (The Port) recently received seven grants from the State of Ohio as part of the new Ohio Brownfield Remediation Fund. Brownfield remediation is the removal of contaminants from a property in order to make the property useful again.
The Ohio Department of Development (ODOD), which administers the state’s Brownfield Remediation program, has provided two rounds of grants this year, awarding $252 million for 190 remediation projects in multiple counties throughout the state. The Port received funding for every project it applied for, totaling more than $12 million for the remediation of the following seven properties in Hamilton County:
“These grants are so critical for us to begin cleaning up environmental contaminants at some of the most blighted properties in Hamilton County,” said Todd Castellini, vice president of public finance and industrial revitalization at The Port. “We’re grateful the state’s leadership recognizes the need to turn blighted and neglected properties into economic development opportunities that will contribute to our region’s growth,” Castellini added.
The environmental remediation on the seven properties will include the removal of asbestos, lead paint, and numerous soil and water contaminants. The Port is coordinating closely with the City of Cincinnati, Hamilton County, and the City of Reading on selected projects. Completion is expected in the Spring of 2023. “Hamilton County is uniquely positioned to leverage these significant grants because of investments made by the Board of County Commissioners and The Port on site readiness,” said Hamilton County Administrator Jeff Aluotto. “Thanks goes to the Commissioners and The Port for leading on the application process that will ultimately lead to more jobs and stronger communities.”
In a news release issued by Governor DeWine’s office announcing the statewide grants the governor said: “These properties are vital spaces in our communities, ones that are not only being wasted in their current capacity, but oftentimes are a danger to their local communities. Today, we’re reclaiming these spaces for the future of our residents, businesses, and communities.”
